🏀 Waterfront UTC v Thomas Aveling

"We did it! We made the Medway League Basketball playoff final! What a proud moment for WUTC and the players involved. Our opponents: Thomas Aveling.

Our players were up for this. You could feel the passion and the drive for victory. Could our small school take down all those larger schools across Medway and be crowned 24/25 champions?

The game itself was tight, and some great basketball was played throughout by both teams. After each quarter it was the following:

  • 1st Quarter: Thomas Aveling in front by 2
  • 2nd Quarter: Both teams equal on points
  • 3rd Quarter: WUTC in front by 7

This shows just how tight the game was. With both teams leading in a quarter and a drawn quarter, it was all down to the final ten minutes. Thomas Aveling came out hard and fast, levelling the score quickly. WUTC needed to dig deep and find themselves, after a shock rapid start by the opposition. The final few minutes went back and forth with Aveling in front, then WUTC, then Aveling. The referee has 7 seconds on the clock. The countdown begins. Is it going to be our day?

Sadly, no! We lost by 2 points. The final score: WUTC 58 vs Thomas Aveling 60...

No words can comfort people in a final loss, and sadly there always has to be a losing team. This game could have easily gone either way, but today was not our day.

However, that does mean our small school managed to finish 2nd in the Medway Basketball Competition, which I feel is an amazing achievement! A special mention to the group of boys who represented WUTC as in my 20 years of teaching, you remember certain teams for different reasons and this group I will never forget. Their attitude towards every game, whether we were winning or losing, has been amazing. They have represented WUTC to the highest standard and are just the most devoted group of players with lovely personalities.

Boys, losing a final is tough, but hold your heads high. You are all brilliant, and I am so proud of all your effort and enthusiasm."
