FM Conway delivered a fantastic interactive engineering workshop to our year 9 students, known as the Bridge Build Project in partnership with Rochester Bridge Trust.

All year 9 students participated in this event and were grouped into their houses to construct a cable-stay suspension bridge using real world materials and techniques.

Those groups were then split into two further groups, one for each end of the bridge and were all given different project roles from project manager, structural engineer, steel fixers and various others roles.

Each role enabled different responsibilities as they worked their way through constructing the bridge.

Once assembled students then had the opportunity to test the bridge by walking from one side to the other and admiring their hard work.

This exercise enhanced STEM skills and supported connections to careers in civil engineering.

All groups did extremely well and were focused throughout the entire session. They conducted themselves in a professional manner and impressed our visiting professionals.

Some students took the opportunity to ask a wide range of questions relating to work experience, apprenticeships and some of the projects FM Conway have been involved in.

We appreciate the organisation and delivery of this project by FM Conway’s representatives and we hope to invite them in again next year to our new cohort of year 9’s.
